The Abductor Digiti Minimi is a superficial muscle of the foot.
Anatomical Attachments:
- Origin: Attaches to the lateral process of the tuberosity of the calcaneus.
- Insertion: Attaches to the lateral aspect of the base of the first phalanx of the little toe.
Action: Flexion and abduction of the little toe.
Nerve Supply: Lateral plantar nerves (S1, S2).
Vascular supply: Lateral plantar artery.
Travell and Simons Trigger Point Pain Referral:
- Primary: The pain refers along the plantar aspect of the 5th metatarsal head onto the adjoining sole.
- Satellite or associated triggers: Deep intrinsic muscles.

Trigger Point Signs and Symptoms: Sore feet, tendency to limp, deep aching pain at rest.
Trigger Point Activating and Perpetuating Factors: Shoes that are too small, injury to the toes.
Differential Diagnosis: S1 Sciatic nerve lesion, Plantar fasciitis, Bunions, Callus or corns, Congenital hypertrophy, Bone fracture, Strain/Sprain, Dislocation/Subluxation of the 5th metatarsal, Bruise of the 5th metatarsal, Hip or knee discomfort secondary to antalgic gait, Diabetic neuropathy, Polyneuropathy, Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (Complex regional pain syndrome), Neurogenic arthropathy (Charcot’s joint), Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bursitis, Systemic infections or inflammation, Nutritional inadequacy, Metabolic imbalance, Toxicity, Side effects of medication.
