The Semispinalis thoracis is a deep muscle of the back.
Anatomical Attachments: Action: Extends the vertebral column, extends and rotates the head toward the contralateral side.
Nerve Supply: Posterior rami thoracic nerve T1 through T6. Vascular supply: Collectively, the muscular branches of the posterior intercostals, the descending branch of the occipital and the deep cervical branch of the costocervical trunk supply the Semispinalis capitis, cervicis and thoracis. Differential Diagnosis: Degenerative disc disease, (Segmental, Subluxation, Somatic dysfunction) C6 C7 T1 T2 T3 T4 T6 T7 T8 T9 T10 T11 or T12 radiculopathy (Bulging Prolapsed, Herniated Disc), Thoracic Spine Hyperkyphosis, Intervertebral or Vertebral Stenosis, Scoliosis, Rib Subluxation (Slipping Rib Syndrome), Ankylosing spondylitis, Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Tetanus, Systemic infections or inflammation, Nutritional inadequacy, Metabolic imbalance, Toxicity, Side effects of medication.
